Prescribed burning can be a valuable tool for managing native plant diversity and controlling undesirable vegetation, but it can be dangerous and ineffective when not used properly. This workshop will provide basic information about how to plan and execute a prescribed burn for grassland management.

This workshop is intended for Morgan/Benton and other PBA members first, but general public can also sign up for the workshop. This is the field day portion of the 2-part Landowner Burn Workshop training. The virtual/online portion of the course is a mandatory prerequisite for attending this class and can be found here: https://www.hunter-ed.com/prescribedburn/. Once you complete the online course you will be given a certificate, bring your 'certificate of completion' to this field day portion in order to get signed off and obtain full certification. Weather permitting, we will be conducting a prescribed burn so please dress accordingly with leather boots, safety glasses, and cotton or wool clothing. Please bring your own sack lunch and drinking water with you, we will break when we travel from the classroom to the field site for lunch. Participants will learn about burn equipment, burn line installation, safe weather parameters, ignition operations, and other techniques to safely conduct a prescribed burn. Nathan E Skinner
