Migration is a demanding journey, and human made structures often add new hazards along the way. Each fall, thousands of birds are lost to window strikes during migration. To highlight this issue, artist Holly Greenberg launched Bird Collisions in the Anthropocene; an effort to create an art installation of 10,836 fabric birds, one for every bird documented after window strikes in Chicago during October 2023. Join us for an afternoon of crafting with a purpose as we make fabric birds to contribute to the installation. No sewing experience needed; we’ll use fabric scraps and glue to build each piece. Finished pieces will be shipped to the project and used in the final exhibition. The artwork will be on display in Chicago with hopes of a traveling show in the future. While we work, a naturalist will share practical steps you can take to support migrating birds in your own community.
