The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and Conservation Law Enforcement at FLW is excited to offer a mentored squirrel hunt for 12 individuals ages 11 and older. This squirrel hunt is for first time hunters or anyone wanting to gain more experience hunting squirrels. Individuals ages 11-15 MUST be accompanied by a registered adult. Participants will meet at Fort Leonard Wood Outdoor Adventure Center (OAC) on Sunday, June 7th to learn more about squirrel biology / behavior, calling techniques, and hunting regulations between 0700-0800. Hunters will be assigned a mentor and then depart to a designated approved FLW site to hunt squirrels between 0800-1100. Participants will return to OAC by 1100 to see a cleaning demonstration and how to prepare squirrel for cooking. Program will conclude by 1200. Hunters 16 years of age and older must be hunter education certified and possess a valid MDC small game hunting permit, or proof of exemption. They must also possess all applicable FLW hunting permits (iSportsman Hunting permit, cost is $17.00). If a participant chooses to bring their own firearm, it MUST be registered with FLW, and they are responsible for bringing their own ammunition. Otherwise, MDC will provide firearm and ammunition for registered participants; just let MDC staff Dwight Warnke (Dwight.Warnke@mdc.mo.gov) know by June 1st if you need to borrow a firearm.
