Prescribed burning can be a valuable tool for managing native plant diversity and controlling undesirable vegetation, but it can be dangerous and ineffective when not used properly. This workshop will provide basic information about how to plan and execute a prescribed burn for grassland management.

If you have not yet completed the Prescribed Burning for Missouri Land Managers training, upon registering for the field portion, please be sure to complete the virtual/online portion of the course prior to the field exercise. This online component is a mandatory prerequisite for the field exercise, and requires a one-time $25.00 fee to a third-party host. Again, you must successfully complete the course and quiz prior to attending the field event. Please bring your certificate of completion with you to the field event. You can access the online training course by copying the URL below and pasting it into your search bar, and then following the prompts (also spelled out in the bullet points below). https://www.hunter-ed.com/prescribedburn/ 1. Click on the “Get Certified” button to begin. (This is the same system we use for Hunter Education, so this may look and seem confusing. Please just follow the written prompts for the Official Missouri Prescribed Burn Course Online) 2. Fill in the information to create an account. (This information is to keep track of your progress/completion records for the online portion of the course. It is only being used by MDC, and will not be shared) 3. Enter payment information. 4. Click the green “Get Started” button. 5. Fill in the "Required Information" which will be used for your Certificate Information. 6. Click "Confirm Certificate Information". If all information looks correct, click "confirm" again. You should now be directed to the “home screen” of your account and the Prescribed Burning class should show towards the top of your screen under the heading “Course in Progress”. 1. You may begin the course at any time, but you need to finish within 90 days of your account activation. (this countdown of days can be found at the top righthand corner of your home screen) 2. Your progress is saved as you work through the training, so you can leave the training and return at your convenience. 3. Expect the training to take 1-3 hours to complete, dependent on your pace and familiarity with the course material. 4. A minimum score of 80% must be obtained on each unit quiz and final exam before certificate of completion is provided. 5. Only one certificate per household is needed. If however, multiple members of the household wish to receive certification, each member will need to take the online training separately to obtain a separate certificate. 6. This is a prerequisite for attending a field day. At the completion of the online training, a certificate will be provided along with a document to record time spent on the online training, time spent at the field exercise, and miles traveled to the field day.
