Did you know you can create your own journal and ink just from nature and old materials? In this hands-on program, we’ll begin by boiling black walnut husks to make a rich, natural black-brown ink. You’ll get to try painting with it and even take some home for your own creative projects. While the ink is boiling, we’ll dive into crafting junk journals - unique, handmade books created from recycled and repurposed materials. We’ll explore simple assembly methods from using binder rings to creating a book with cardboard, fabric, and elastic bands. Journals can be themed around travel, nature, memories of a loved one, or anything meaningful to you. Just don’t forget to leave some blank space for future writing and sketching with your new natural ink! Participants are encouraged (but not required) to bring items to personalize their journals, such as: old books or notebooks, fabric scraps, paper, cards, ribbons, buttons, lace, stamps, string, calendars, seed packets, paint swatches, envelopes, stationery, or music sheets. We will have old conservationist magazines, cardboard, and other natural and craft materials for you to use. Come ready to create, repurpose, and have fun! Maura Horton
