Prescribed burning can be a valuable tool for managing native plant diversity and controlling undesirable vegetation, but it can be dangerous and ineffective when not used properly. This workshop will provide basic information about how to plan and execute a prescribed burn for grassland management.

| The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) is hosting the field portion of the Prescribed Burning for Missouri Land Managers training, which is required to receive MDC cost-share funds and/or a burn plan written by MDC staff. Landowners, land managers, and contractors are encouraged to attend this certification course for basic instruction on how to conduct a prescribed burn, participation in MDC cost-share or receiving MDC written burn plans is not a requirement to attend. Prescribed burning mimics the historical occurrence of fire that shaped our plant communities, but it is conducted under a prescription of specified environmental conditions, such as temperature, humidity, fuel moisture, wind speed and direction – which are covered in the online and field portions of this course. Many other considerations involved in planning and executing a prescribed burn will also be covered. Participants can become certified prescribed burn managers through a self-paced three-hour online prescribed burn course followed by an all-day field exercise to demonstrate skills learned. Both the online and in-field portions are required to obtain certification. There is a $25 fee for the online course through a third-party host (Hunter-Ed.com). |
