Experience the ancient craft of leather making in this immersive, hands-on class focused on bark tanning deer hides. Using traditional methods and natural materials, students will work directly with raw deer hides and tannin-rich tree bark "tea" to learn the full process of creating durable, beautiful leather—from start to finish. This introductory-level course is perfect for beginners and anyone interested in traditional skills, sustainable materials, or connecting with traditional crafts. Over the course of the class, participants will gain practical experience in: -Hide preparation: fleshing, dehairing, and soaking techniques -Tannin extraction: identifying, harvesting, and preparing bark -The tanning process: soaking and maintaining the hides through weeks-long bark baths -Leather finishing: softening and oiling -Tool use and care specific to traditional tanning You’ll leave with a working knowledge of the entire bark tanning process, plus the confidence and skills to tan hides on your own. Participants will also receive printed handouts and a list of resources for continuing their practice at home. All materials are provided, including raw deer hides (ethically sourced), tools, and bark. Please be prepared for outdoor work (dress in layers), extended hide handling (bring rubber gloves and maybe an apron), and getting messy! Class includes: -Direct, guided instruction at every stage -One-on-one troubleshooting and technique refinement -A take-home piece of bark-tanned leather No prior experience is needed—just a willingness to work with your hands and learn a slow, rewarding process. Lunch will be on your own. Pack your own or venture into nearby Puxico - there are a couple of options but may not be the most time efficient. All participants under 18, need to be accompanied by a registered adult Sally Hancock
