Have you ever wondered how leather for belts, shoes and leather bags are made? Well, it is bark tanning that gets the job done. Join us to learn how to tan a hide using bark tannins. This class will be an overview of the bark tanning process where we will review the history of bark tanning, its definitions, with emphasis on the process and materials you would need to tan with bark. You will walk away with a list a materials, sources for items, and a proven process that works. We will be focusing mainly on deer hides with options for both hair-on and hair-off tanning. Examples of bark tanned leather and hides will be available for examination. This class will be a good comparison and companion to the brain tanning class held immediately following this class on the same day. |
