Who are the little prairie wolves? When Lewis and Clark explored the trail of the Missouri River, they recorded hearing and seeing "little prairie wolves" which we now call coyotes. Coyotes still live at Columbia Bottom where they play an important role in the wildlife community. Learn where they spend most of their time and why these shy and elusive creatures are more often heard than seen. Examine a coyote pelt and feel the sharp edges of their teeth in a coyote skull to understand why they are such successful hunters. After learning about these "little prairie wolves," we will take a walk to listen for coyotes along a prairie as the Full Snow Moon rises, and we may try our own calls to see if they will answer us. Return to the building for hot chocolate. Meet at the Visitor Center. Dress for the weather. Wear boots or shoes that can get wet or muddy. Bring a flashlight or lantern and a walking stick if you have one. |
