Join us as we welcome a virtual presentation by author, conservationist, and entomologist Doug Tallamy. Doug is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Wildlife Ecology at the University of Delaware. He has written and co-authored several books, as well as many papers. Doug advocates for home gardens and landscaping that bridge the gaps between parks and preserves in providing habitat for native species. In A Chickadee’s Guide to Gardening, Doug discusses this: "In the past we have designed our landscapes strictly for our own pleasure, with no thought to how they might impact the natural world around us. Such landscapes do not contribute much to local ecosystem function and support little life. Using chickadees and other wildlife as guides, Tallamy will explain how plants that evolved in concert with local animals provide for their needs better than plants that evolved elsewhere. In the process he shows how creating living landscapes by sharing our spaces with other living things will not reduce our pleasurable garden experiences, but enhance them." This program will be presented virtually, and we will also show it in the auditorium at Powder Valley. You may choose to come to the nature center to watch the presentation, or you may watch it from the comfort and convenience of your own home. The doors at Powder Valley will open at 6 pm so guests may tour the exhibits. Volunteer staff will also manage tables on topics like Missouri native plants and pollinators and showcase some of Tallamy's books. A link will be provided 24 hours before the program. All who register must give a valid email address where the link may be sent. Robyn Parker
