Participants will drive to the Sweet's Cabin trailhead on the Auto Tour Drive at Mingo NWR and hike to the historic Sweet's Cabin where they will learn about the native butternut trees. Afterwards, participants will learn to utilize hand tools to carve their own trencher bowl using ethically sourced butternut wood. Participants will learn layout and design, and the care and use of hand tools. This is considered an intermediate woodworking class. Previous experience with hand tools is required. The hike to the cabin is a moderate hike with decent inclines and uneven terrain. Please take this into consideration before registering. Bring your sturdy hiking shoes, layered clothing for the weather, leather gloves, water, snacks, lunch, and a fun learning attitude!!! We will be in a remote area of the refuge, so plan accordingly. |
