The Missouri River doesn't run just across land. It also travels through time. Every day, the Big Muddy carves deeper into half a million square miles of land, unearthing evidence of the historic and prehistoric past. When the river level falls, it exposes miles of sandbars where artifacts lie waiting to be discovered. A river beachcomber might find anything from a beautifully crafted obsidian arrowhead to a patent medicine bottle from the hold of a wrecked 18th century riverboat. They could discover an elk antler or the skull of a long-extinct bison twice the size of its modern descendants. Join experienced river beachcombers for an introduction to the fascinating hobby of sandbar archaeology. You will get to handle artifacts and learn how to collect bits of history safely, ethically, and legally. Treasure hunters of all ages are invited! Becky Matney
