Note: Registering for this kayaking program requires that you attend a safety and logistics meeting on Friday April 16 at 6:30 pm at the Cape Nature Center or tune in virtually via webcam. The actual trip date is April 24 from 9:00am-5:00pm. This registration is for the meeting, upon attendance of the safety meeting you will be registered for the trip. Looking for adventure? The Castor River winds its way through the hills of Missouri before finding its way to the Mississippi near Cape Girardeau. Though less well known than its higher profile Ozark cousins, this small river offers crystal clear water and sunny gravel banks to rival the best of them. Eagles, mink, smallmouth and countless dragon flies call this stream home. This float is more physical than streams like the Current or Black due to its smaller size, shallower sections, and possible obstacles which need to be portaged around. The program is open to beginners; however, participants should expect a moderately high level of physical activity on this 6-8 mile trip. Because of the ongoing COVID-19 situation MDC is unable to shuttle participants. Participants must therefore register together with friends or family and bring two vehicles to the meeting point and self shuttle over well maintained roads. One vehicle will remain at the put in, the other will be moved to the take out down stream. Further details will be provided at the pre-meeting; however, your shuttling vehicles do not need to carry a kayak, as MDC will shuttle all equipment. Experienced instructors, lifejackets, kayaks, and paddles will all be provided. Masks are recommended at the pre-meeting. Alex Holmes
