The Dance of the Timberdoodles at Young Conservation Area Join naturalists for a guided hike to look for one of the most bizarre looking birds that calls Missouri home. The American woodcock is one of the earliest migrating shorebirds? But you will not find this bird along the shorelines. They begin their courtship (mating) on warm winter and early spring nights, often seen fluttering up into the sky and back down to the ground. We will discuss the woodcock life history, followed by a hike to try to see and hear these amazing creatures as they perform their mating rituals. We will also look for other nocturnal critters, such as salamanders, frogs, and mammals. Limit of 20 individuals, social distancing will be practiced, and masks will be required when we cannot appropriately socially distance. Please register each person attending. We will meet at the Young Conservation Area parking lot at 6pm on Tuesday, March 9th. Young Conservation area is located in Eureka off of hwy FF, coming from HWY 44, take 109 south, then take a right onto hwy FF. Coming from HWY 30 in House Springs, take hwy W north, then a left onto hwy FF. You also can look up directions on google maps. Shelly Colatskie
