The beauty and diversity of lichens is more noticeable and easier to appreciate and study before spring leaf out. Lichens make a significant contribution to the biodiversity of Missouri’s natural communities. The workshop will begin in the classroom where recognizing lichens, their growth forms and field marks will be covered along with the tools and skills needed to make identifications. The workshop includes a trail-hike foray into various lichen habitats where identification skills can be practiced. A quality hand lens of at least 10x and a small sharp pocket knife will be useful tools to bring although these will also be provided as needed during the workshop. Since lichen identification is best done in dry conditions, this outdoor workshop will be cancelled in the event of inclement weather. DAVID J BRUNS
