Event is free. Enjoy a float from Trail of Tears State Park to Red Star Access on North America’s largest river—the mighty Mississippi! Eat lunch on a sandbar and explore the river with expert guides. This is for experienced paddlers only and participants must attend the Friday night session about navigation, river flows, hazards, and other important information to participate in the float. Navigating the river requires skill and strength-please consider your personal fitness before signing up. No first timers on this trip! Registration will be by phone, please call 573-290-5218. Participants need to attend the Friday pre-float meeting at the nature center. Participants will meet at Red Star Access at 7:30 AM on Saturday morning for transportation to Trail of Tears State Park. Individuals that are bringing their own boats can drop off their boats at Trail of Tears from 6:45-7:10 am, they can then drive to Red Star Access to leave their vehicle and catch the shuttle. Personal Flotation Devices (PFDS/Life Jackets) are required. Please bring your lunch, a water bottle, sunscreen, hat, water shoes (no flip-flops), shorts, etc. Float consists of 13 river miles and is dependent on weather and river stages. The river flows at 5 mph on average. A support boat will be present at all times and will be used to carry water coolers. Personal gear should be light enough to be carried in their boat. Experienced = i.e. participants who have more than one year of experience paddling rivers like the Current, Missouri, or Black, OR participants who have participated in a large river float before on rivers like the Mississippi or the Missouri.
