November 6, 1818 dawned cool, clear and pure; it was going to be a perfect fall day in the Missouri territory. A gentle breeze blew from the south-west and the dried oak leaves crunched as they walked up the hill. Upon reaching the summit Henry and Levi took one last look at the valley that lay below. The small hamlet of Mine á Breton (present day Potosi) with its smoking chimneys and lead smelters drifted smoke to the north. As they turned from the view they looked west; behind them laid Schoolcraft’s unfortunate business failure, but in front of them lay a vast untamed Ozark wilderness rich with the promise of a fresh start and abundant wildlife like elk, bear, deer, turkey, bison, mountain lions, and wolves. Join MDC Regional Supervisor Brian Flowers as we explore the natural history of the pre-settlement Ozarks and how modern-day explorers can learn from Schoolcraft’s journey. BRIAN D FLOWERS
